TEAM TEXAS JUNIOR HIGH DUAL NATIONALS

TX USA Wrestling Community

June 13, 2003

Dear Wrestlers and Supporters,

It has been over two months since my last letter.  I know everyone has finished up school and has their summer in full swing.  This will be my last letter until after we get back from Fargo in July so I wanted to answer some questions, give you some updates, and finally dispel a few myths.

This has been the best spring in the History of women’s wrestling in Texas.  More girls signed scholarships to wrestle in college than ever before.  We also had more women on the mat wrestling freestyle than ever before.  For the first time we had one of our graduating seniors compete in Las Vegas at the U.S. Women’s Nationals.  Diana Mato from Katy Taylor was one match from qualifying for the World Team Trials this summer.  She proved to herself and others that she belongs on that elite level in Women’s wrestling now and in the future.  It was my honor to coach her at that tournament.  She made Texas proud!  One other wrestler who made not only Texas proud but also women’s wrestling proud is our National assistant coach Lisa Whitsett.  Coach Whitsett just had a wonderful book called Beneath the Armour of an Athlete published.  It is the first book on women’s wrestling and you can get it at any major bookstores.

Now I should try to answer a few questions.  The State Freestyle tournament is on June 21st at Houston Westside High School.  If you go to the website the flyer is online.  I expect to see every female wrestler in the state there.  Last year’s tournament was a joke; we only had one weight class in which a match needed to take place.  Everyone else got their first place medal by forfeit.  This year we need to do much better.   Those of you planning on wrestling at Fargo this summer will need to bring $300 for your deposit to the state tournament.  The remaining $500 will be due when you show up at the team camp on the 16th of July.  Our team camp will be one of the best women’s camps in the country this year with U.S. National Champion Sara McMann running it for us.

Coach Lisa Whitsett and I spoke with all of the college coaches in Las Vegas and had many questions answered.  The college coaches want you learning and wrestling freestyle since this is what you will do in college.  They are not as concerned with national folkstyle tournaments after your season is over.  They want you wrestling freestyle!   Because of this based on their recommendations we are recommending that we go to the FILA Nationals in March next year instead of the USGWA tournament.  The colleges have been very unhappy with their treatment at USGWA and they will be competing in Minnesota next year at FILA’s.  Also Cumberland College and the Olympic Training Center teams will be coming to Frisco this year for a tournament in December.  All high school teams in Texas are invited to attend; we have already received commitments from schools in California, Oklahoma, and Michigan to attend this tournament.  It should be one of the largest tournaments in the country.  We are looking at having ten 32-girl brackets.  How many of you had that last year during your high school season?  Plus you will get to see many of our top women wrestlers preparing for the Olympics next year.

Now let me take care of a myth that I have been hearing.  Unlike some other tournaments around the country, you CANNOT wrestle as an independent in Fargo; you must compete as a part of Team Texas.  If you show up in Fargo without us, you will not wrestle in the tournament.  You have to qualify through the states and show up with your state.  We are only allowed a certain number at each weight and want to put together our best team.  Texas has a shot at winning a National Championship this year.  This was the best high school group that has ever wrestled in Texas and will only get better.  We need to go get our championship.  All of the colleges will be there scouting for the future.  YOU NEED TO BE THERE!!!  Don’t let anything get in your way of winning this title.

As always if you have questions please email me at cbrown@txusawrestling.com I will be more than happy to answer all emails.

                                                                        Sincerely,

                                                                        Chuck Brown

                                                                        Women’s State Director
