John Vogt

John Vogt, coach at Sam Houston High School, has been coaching for 40 years. "I wrestled my first match in 1959, qualified for state 4 years in high school, started my first High School team in Minnesota in 1969, my second in Illinois in 1974, The Woodlands in 1999, Houston Lee in 2000, and Sam Houston High School in 2006," Vogt said. " I believe that I owe the sport and coaching repays that debt."

Vogt enjoys helping wrestlers realize their hidden potential. He feels that society has handicapped the female wrestlers by not having high expectations from them and pushing them equally as hard as the male wrestlers to become the best.

Female and male wrestlers all share the desire to become the best athletes they can be, Vogt believes. As a coach, one way he motivates them to become better wrestlers is help them realize success. According to Vogt, his coaching style is "Old School" - take 'em down and pin 'em! He trains his wrestlers to be aggressive, focused, and work for the pin.

"The worse part about wrestling is watching talent wasted due to bad grades, bad luck or attitude," Vogt said.

Vogt praises the UIL for helping the sport grow in Texas. "Every since UIL began running Texas Wrestling the Houston area has improved each and every year," Vogt said. He cites Cinco Ranch winning the State Trophy last year as an example of the competitive surge in the southern part of the state. "Anyone that survives Region 4 needs to be watched again at State this year," Vogt advises.

"With Texas growing to 220 UIL Boys Teams and 195 Girls Teams, we need more Coaches going out and starting even more Teams to grow the Sport of Wrestling into Major Sport status," Vogt feels. He hopes that all Assistant Coaches stick with it to become Head Coaches.
