Future Champion Camp
Ladies, I wanted to give you all a heads up on a camp opportunity that will be open to young female wrestlers this spring. Terry Steiner, the women’s national coach, will be sending out information later in February about the Future Champion Camp. I want to tell you now what the camp will have to offer, but you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled for all of the detailed information to come out later.
The camp will be held in Colorado Springs, Colorado where both USA Wrestling and the Olympic Training Center (OTC) are located. Terry Steiner, women’s national team members, and women from the OTC resident program will work the camp. We will focus on a wide range of technique for freestyle wrestling. Campers will have the chance to learn the techniques and drills that the residents of the OTC execute during their practices. This camp will also be an extensive introduction to freestyle wrestling for anyone who has never wrestled anything but folkstyle. A solid understanding of freestyle is important for any female wrestler who plans to train and compete after high school.
Another major goal of this camp will be to provide campers with an entire women’s wrestling camp experience. Obviously, we’ll cover as much wrestling on the mat as possible, but this camp will also give young females the chance to experience women’s wrestling off of the mats as well. It will bring together some of the nation’s top ranked senior level women as clinicians, as well as younger women wrestlers from all over the US. OTC resident practices will be held at the camp site so that the campers will be able to watch senior level practices. Each night there will be time for campers to spend time with one another to learn about different experiences in the sport, and to spend time with older women wrestlers. Although technique sessions will make up the bulk of the camp sessions, there will also be seminars each day to cover topics like weight lifting and sports psychology.
I encourage any female wrestler to consider this camp, whether you are new to the sport or starting to climb the ranks at the cadet and junior level in women’s wrestling. This will be a chance to know freestyle wrestling better, to meet and get to know other women wrestlers from all levels, and to improve your wrestling outside the regular high school season. It will also be a chance for you to get to know your national coach and top senior level women more. If you ever want to travel with cadet or junior world teams, or to train as a camper or a resident at the Olympic Training Center, it will also help to let Coach Steiner know a little about you as well.
