| UIL Wrestling Proposal
*UPDATE* The proposal has passed. It will go into effect as it is signed by the Education Commissioner. So that means that once the commissioner approves it it doesn't have to wait until the next year to go into effect. Our boys still can't wrestle girls out of state so please keep that in mind.
TX Wrestling, as you already know, when Tx wrestlers go out of state, boys have to forfeit to girls if they draw them in the bracket. This is the proposal I am presenting Oct. 15-16 to the UIL Legislature in Austin hopefully to get passed. Could you put this on your web site to make everyone aware of this problem and to help them be informed? I will send the vote to you when the meeting over. If you could would put it on the NWCA site Tx coaches would appreciate it.
Thank you, Steve Nelson of Palo Duro High School in Amarillo Tx, Head Coach for both boys and girls
UIL Legislature Council Member
I am sending you a wrestling proposal prior to the next meeting because it is an issue of difficult nature. I believe council members can get a better understanding by reading this proposal early. The intention is to help you make a decision based on what is best for Texas wrestlers. If the proposal is read in its entirety prior to my giving testimony, it will allow members time to develop any questions they may still need answered. I am respectfully asking you to read myproposal before I speak October 15th. I am happy to be the information provider between the Texas wrestling community and the UIL Legislature on this issue. I am coming as an advocate for the student wrestlers under the guidance of the UIL. I believe if this proposal is read carefully there will be a well thought out decision made in the best interests of yourstudent wrestlers. I will give testimony and then be present at the athletic standing committee meeting. After the public hearing I will not be able to speak at any other meetings unless addressed by a UIL coordinator or council member. I witnessed last year how hard it is to disseminate wrestling information, making this issue even harder to understand. I definitely want to answer the council’s questions during any three of the meetings in defense of our proposal October 15th-16tth. I just need you to ask.
Respectfully,
Steve Nelson
Texas Wrestling Coaches Association Representative
